1. Eat balanced meals
Remember, all macronutrients (protein, fats, carbs) are important to stay healthy, stay fit, and to ensure you don’t become “hangry”! Here is a quick example of a macro balanced breakfast idea: Greek yogurt topped with fruit along with a bowl of oatmeal plus a swirl of nut butter on top. Yum!
2. Increase consumption of fiber rich foods
Think fruits, vegetables, legumes, & whole grains. These foods will help keep you fuller for longer and promote a healthy gut. Keep in mind, you also don’t want to go overboard on the fiber either. This can lead to GI discomfort especially if you’re not used to eating fiber rich foods. Further, too much fiber can interfere with absorption of other nutrients. (Current recommendations for fiber are 25g/day for women, 38g/day for men)
3. Increase your NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis)
NEAT makes up all the activities you do through out the day that is NOT sleeping, eating, or planned exercise. (i.e. walking, doing activities with your kids, cleaning the house, etc). It might not seem like much, but these extra activities will have an impact on your overall energy expenditure, and will positively impact your health.
4. Try to limit screen time ~2hrs before bed
The blue light that emits from electronics can interfere with your sleep cycle. For my late night Netflix binge watchers, or night owls, investing in blue light glasses, find my favorites here, might help, or switching your device to night mode!
5. Be compassionate with yourself
A lot has changed in the past year. Be mindful of how you’re feeling, and allow yourself a break if that’s what you need. Remember, you’ll never be able to achieve your goals if you’re constantly stressed. Mental health matters!
